Earwax Removal Service

Medwin Pharmacy offers a private earwax removal service at our pharmacy in York. A build-up of earwax can affect your hearing and cause discomfort, and it is usually straightforward to treat.

How does the service work?

If you have a build-up of earwax that is affecting your hearing, or causing any of the symptoms listed below, our earwax removal service may be able to help.

Microsuction is widely considered one of the safest methods of professional earwax removal. A trained member of our pharmacy team will examine inside your ear with specialist equipment and use a gentle suction device to remove the excess wax.

We recommend using olive oil ear drops for five to seven days before your appointment to soften the wax. Olive oil ear drops and spray are available to buy from the pharmacy.

What is earwax?

Your ear canal produces cerumen, better known as earwax. It is there to stop dust, bacteria and foreign objects from reaching deeper into the ear, and it helps protect the skin of the ear canal from water. In some people the wax hardens and becomes impacted over time, which can lead to hearing loss or discomfort.

Signs and symptoms of earwax build-up

  • Earache
  • Difficulty hearing
  • Itchiness in the ear
  • Dizziness
  • Ear infection
  • High-pitched sounds coming from inside the ear (tinnitus)
